My intensive three-month Professional Practice Workshop explores how to develop graffiti, street art and mural projects for clients. Through classroom sessions, visits to existing artworks and practical painting, I guide participants through the process of researching, designing, presenting and executing a commission.

The course brings together artistic practice and the requirements of working with businesses. Participants develop their techniques while learning how to respond to a client’s brief, prepare a proposal and organise the work needed to paint shutters and exterior spaces.

Understanding Public Art and Its Context

We begin by studying the history of public art and its impact on communities. We visit selected areas with original murals, graffiti and street art to examine different styles and techniques through real examples.

These visits provide a starting point for discussing the relationship between an artwork and its surroundings. We consider how artists approach different surfaces and spaces, connecting these observations with the projects participants will develop during the workshop.

Drawing, Composition and Spray Painting Techniques

Working with me and different specialists, participants explore freehand spray painting, stencil, rollers, brushes and masking tape. We practise different methods for transferring a sketch onto a wall and develop the drawing skills needed to prepare a design.

Classroom work includes colour theory, composition and proportions. Participants learn to consider the dimensions of the painting surface as they organise their ideas, refine the composition and select their colours.

Alongside this technical work, we hold brainstorming sessions on marketing and business identity, looking at how a design can respond to the commercial needs of a client.

Developing a Design for a Real Client

Participants meet the owners of selected businesses who want to decorate their shutters and invest in their exterior appearance. They collect the information and references needed to approach the project as a commissioned work.

Back in the classroom, I guide the brainstorming and design process. We work with the information gathered from the client, considering the business identity, commercial requirements and proportions of the space.

Once the composition and colour selection are complete, participants prepare the final sketch and proposal. This stage connects the creative process with the responsibility of presenting a design for approval before painting begins.

From Approved Proposal to Finished Wall

After the proposal is approved and the schedule is confirmed, we move on to preparation. Participants learn how to prepare the working area and protect the surrounding surfaces before applying paint.

During execution, they put the techniques covered in the course into practice: transferring the sketch to the wall, using the appropriate painting methods and improving their skills as the project develops.

I guide participants through this stage, helping them connect their classroom work with the practical demands of completing a mural or painted shutter for a client.
